What are the Common Invisible Injuries Following an Accident?

After getting into a car accident be mindful that delayed, and invisible injuries are common. Why do injuries appear later? Depending on how your body reacts to stress determines how soon you feel pain and injuries after the accident. The injuries can present themselves after days, weeks, and even months, and can last a lifetime.

So what are these invisible injuries?

  1. Concussion

The most common is a concussion. After an accident you may feel great, and walk away without consulting a doctor. Left undiagnosed and untreated, a brain injury can have serious long-term effects.

2. Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD)

There is also whiplash, which is a range of neck injuries related to sudden distortions of the neck. This includes neck strains, ruptured ligaments, and soft tissue damage. After an accident, there are endorphins flooding you, so you may not feel the neck pain until later.

Soreness or injury in the back and shoulders are common due to the jolt of the collision, as well as internal knee injuries following contact with the dash, which can include fractured kneecaps, ruptured ligaments, or damaged cartilage.

3. Psychological Injuries

Another very common invisible injury present, regardless of seriousness after an accident is psychological injuries. This includes anxiety, fears, phobias, PTSD, and depression. Thirty-Three percent (33%) of people who have been involved in a motor vehicle accident have, or are struggling with one or more of these illnesses. The problem with psychological disorders is that they can’t be seen, and symptoms are different for everyone, so they are hard to diagnose. Even if you consulted a doctor after an accident, your psychological damage may only present itself months later.

These illnesses can last a lifetime if untreated, and can be incredibly disruptive and damaging to a person’s wellness.  You don’t have to suffer in silence, by getting help, you can work towards getting back to your pre-accident condition.

Consulting a doctor after an accident is extremely important to assuring that your injuries aren’t left untreated.
